Food

Food at the UCL Academy is one of the most popular subjects amongst students of all ages. We love to see our students learn to prepare and cook using a range of different ingredients, while also understanding the nutritional values that food offers.

A healthier lifestyle and approach to our diets is something we strive to deliver in our department. With many fun and exciting opportunities to study food both in the classroom and through our SDL programme, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Key Stage 3

KS3 students get one rotation of food each year during which they have 2 lessons a week. During this period students will develop and hone their culinary skills and learn new and exciting recipes. They learn about food hygiene and safety practises in food preparation and the nutritional values and food properties. They also develop their scientific knowledge of food and nutrition, as well as food provenance.

We believe that a practical approach is very important in establishing knowledge and therefore each lesson is divided into theory and practice.

Key Stage 4

At KS4 students can opt to study Food Preparation and Nutrition as a GCSE, for which there are 3 lessons a week. This course allows students to develop and extend their practical skills and knowledge of:

  • Food, nutrition and health
  • Food science
  • Food safety
  • Food choice
  • Food provenance

This specification aims to attract students to study Food Preparation and Nutrition by offering an interesting and stimulating programme of study. Students will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of human needs in a diverse society and to work in a variety of contexts. Students will also have the opportunity to develop their theoretical knowledge and enhance the scientific side of nutrition whilst having the opportunity to apply practical skills, techniques and understanding in practical sessions.

During SDL Food sessions, students prepare and cook a range of sweet and savoury products using various skills, techniques and ingredients from different food groups. This a great SDL for anyone who wants to learn essential skills, become a better cook and take products made home to their family.
