Religion, Ethics and Philosophy

Our aim is to create a curriculum that represents the student body of the Academy by using internal expert teaching and external bodies have a Religious Studies curriculum which is diverse challenging and academically rigorous.

For all students to be a citizen who is able to be literate in Religious Studies and in understanding the world we live in.

Who will build on their Religious Studies knowledge year by year and leave the Academy with a solid understanding of religion and ethical issues in the world around us.

Key Stage 3

Along with history and geography, religious studies is an inquiry based subject that is grounded in academic teaching. We begin our understanding of world religions through a much more local lense, in Foundation we look at the local community around Camden and the religious influences we see everyday. We continue to look at the three Abrahamic religions and the three biggest eastern faiths considering their key beliefs and the main practices. This allows students to understand the big religious events that occur in the world around them. We further our study with controversial topics, understanding and respecting all opinions but also considering the religious and non-religious points of views. We combine these well-considered topics with the UCL Academy grand challenges and link global issues with challenges such as justice and cultural understanding.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 we take the AQA GCSE which has 8 parts to it. We look at the key content and apply this through exam skills and refined exam technique. We begin in L2 building on our knowledge from key stage 3 focussing on Christianity and Islam and the beliefs and practices they have. This looks at their main beliefs, books of authority,  belief about their God, holy celebrations and the way religion shapes people’s lives. Into L2P we look at four topics focussing on relationships and families, religion and life, crime and punishment and human rights. All these subjects are studied in ks3 and ks4 is a real opportunity for students to build on their knowledge but in a much more sophisticated way.

Key Stage 5

A Level Philosophy comprises four topic areas: Epistemology, Moral Philosophy, the Metaphysics of God and the Metaphysics of mind. The AQA AS and A Level Philosophy qualifications are designed to give students a thorough grounding in the key concepts and methods of philosophy. Students will have the opportunity to engage with big questions in a purely secular context. The students will develop important skills that they need for progression to higher education. They’ll learn to be clear and precise in their thinking and writing. They will engage with complex texts, analysing and evaluating the arguments of others and constructing and defending their own arguments.
