Economics
At the UCL Academy, we aim for our economists to develop an understanding of their role within society as individuals and to critically evaluate the impact of business’ and governments’ decision making on our lives. From studying economics, students will be able to analyse the potential costs and benefits of contemporary affairs and to make reasoned judgements from the basis of them.
Key Stage 4
At GCSE, students are introduced to the underpinnings of economic theory, where they first learn about the role of consumers, firms and markets. They then develop an understanding of the role of the government and the different approaches that are used to ensure that welfare to society is maximised.
In the second year of the course, students use their prior knowledge to consider how government policy can impact the economy on an international scale. They also are required to consider the impacts decision making can have on the environment and future generations.
Key Stage 5
A Level Economics covers a wider breadth of topics than is covered at GCSE. Students that have not previously studied the course are taught the foundations of economics which some of their peers would have learnt at Level 2. At the end of the course all students will have an enhanced understanding of market operations from a Micro and Macroeconomic perspective. Greater focus on the importance of the financial system, international trade and economic development is explored at Level 3.
