AI Deepfakes and their Impact on Society
A group of our Year 12 Computer Science students recently took part in a Google DeepMind session focused on artificial intelligence and its impact on society. As part of this experience, they attended an event about AI deepfakes.
One of the most striking points discussed was how realistic deepfakes have become. Modern AI systems can now create highly convincing videos and voices, which can make it difficult for people to distinguish between real and fake content. Because of this, deepfakes can be used to spread misinformation, damage reputations, or influence public opinion.
The event also explored the ethical challenges surrounding this technology. Topics such as consent, responsibility, and the potential misuse of AI were discussed in detail. These conversations highlighted the importance of developing clear guidelines and using AI responsibly.
The session gave them a clear understanding of the power and risks of deepfakes, highlighting the need for everyone to stay critical, informed, and responsible when interacting with AI-generated content.
